Day 9 – Reading to Henley-on-Thames – 9 miles

I suppose it is a Good Thing ™ to be able to call a nine mile day “short”, but it was a welcome break for both our feet.  The miles are starting to add up and take their toll in blisters, hot spots, sore bits and other unsightly maladies.  We are still in good shape, all things considered.

We have been so lucky with the weather on this trip and today was no exception.  By late morning the overcast burned off and we were treated to another perfect walking day; mostly sunny, a little breezy but the occasional cloud for some shade.

As we are getting closer to larger towns and cities (Reading, population 232,662 as opposed to Clifton Hampden, 641) we are meeting more and more people on the Thames Path.  While it is nice to occasionally stop and chat with other walkers, we tend to get a little possessive of “our” trail and don’t like to share.

The Thames itself is now a fully grown river; the weirs are like waterfalls and the boats on the river are getting larger with each passing mile.

We made it to Henley in good time today and being a Saturday the riverfront promenade and meadow park were full of people enjoying the day.  The Henley Regatta is coming up in July – while I am sure that it would be a fun event to attend, I can’t imagine the crowds packed in to this small town.

Henley is a “very chic” town, according to our host here at Falaise House.  Judging from the shops and restaurants along the high street I would have to agree with that.  Henley is a short drive or train ride from London and has been an “in” place for almost 200 years.
